Tally is a Whippet. They resemble greyhounds but are a separate breed.
Whippets are elegant looking medium size sighthounds, originally bred to
pursue and capture small game. They generally weigh between 25 to 35 pounds
and stand 18 to 22 inches tall.
We got Tally to be a companion for Kirby, our other Whippet. We didn't
feel it was right for one Whippet to be outnumbered by Rottweilers!
Tally was very sweet and affectionate and feminine. Her favorite place was
curled up on Doug's lap. She was on the timid side with other dogs,
but she warmed up to them if they were not too rough. When we passrf out
rawhides Tally wouldn't take hers until no one was watching, and then she
wanted to go in her crate for some privacy.
She was what is called a fawn brindle. I think she was the most beautiful
dog - her coat reminded me of a zebra brownie with its swirl pattern. I
never got tired of looking at her.
Tally was very gentle - she never pulled on the leash when out
walking....UNLESS she spotted a squirrel or rabbit. Then, hang on! She turned
from a mild mannered hound into a maniac. She would also chase cats if they
dared to venture into the yard. Yet she was buddies with our four pound
Chihuahua, and they curled up together on the dog bed on a sunny day.
Here's a big difference between our two Whippets: When I was outside with
them, Kirby was constantly checking in to see where I was. (Mom just might
have a cookie.) Tally, on the other hand, was scanning the horizon for any
signs of small critters. When Tally was inside she would stare out the patio
door into the backyard, watching 'doggie TV'.
Tally was a lure coursing champion, but her most important title iwa Queen
Whippet and her most important job was lap warming. We just loved this
beautiful little hound.
